How Percentage is Calculated

Percentages represent fractions of 100. Calculating P% of a value involves multiplying the value by P and dividing by 100. When calculating the percentage difference between two values, the absolute change is divided by the base original value.

Mathematical Formula
Percentage of X = (P / 100) × X Percentage Change = ((New Value - Old Value) / |Old Value|) × 100
Formula Variables & Logic

P is the target percentage rate, Old Value is the benchmark starting number, and New Value is the updated figure.

Worked Example: Calculating Sales Growth
Sample Calculation
Scenario: A company increased its quarterly revenue from $40,000 to $58,000.
Step-by-step breakdown
  1. 1Difference = $58,000 - $40,000 = $18,000
  2. 2Divide difference by baseline: $18,000 / $40,000 = 0.45
  3. 3Multiply by 100 to get percentage: 0.45 × 100 = 45%
Estimated Result
Revenue increased by 45.00%.

What affects Percentage results

  • The baseline starting value used for comparison.
  • Direction of change (increase vs decrease produces asymmetric percentage rates).
  • Magnitude of absolute differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a percentage increase exceed 100%?

Yes. If a quantity doubles from 10 to 20, the increase is 100%. If it triples to 30, the increase is 200%.

How do I calculate what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the specific portion by the total whole and multiply by 100. For example, 25 out of 200 is (25 / 200) × 100 = 12.5%.
