How to use the EV Charging Time Calculator

  1. 1Enter battery pack size (kWh).
  2. 2Enter current starting battery percentage and target charging percentage (e.g. 20% to 80%).
  3. 3Enter charger output power rating in kW (e.g. 7.2 kW home wallbox or 150 kW DC fast charger).

How Charging Time is Calculated

Calculates energy needed in kWh, factors in charging efficiency (~90%), and divides by charger power in kW.

Mathematical Formula
Energy Added (kWh) = Battery Capacity × (Target % - Start %) / 100 Charging Time (Hours) = (Energy Added / Efficiency) / Charger Power (kW)
Formula Variables & Logic

DC fast charging speed tapers significantly past 80% state of charge to protect battery chemistry.

Worked Example: Charging a 60 kWh EV from 20% to 80% on a 7.4 kW Home Charger
Sample Calculation
Scenario: Adding 60% charge to a 60 kWh battery on a 7.4 kW Level 2 AC charger with 90% efficiency.
Step-by-step breakdown
  1. 1Energy Added = 60 kWh × 0.60 = 36 kWh
  2. 2Energy Drawn = 36 / 0.90 = 40.0 kWh
  3. 3Charge Time = 40.0 / 7.4 = 5.41 hours (5 hours 25 minutes)
Estimated Result
Charging time is 5 hours 25 minutes (40.0 kWh drawn).

What affects Charging Time results

  • Vehicle onboard AC charger limits (e.g. many EVs cap AC charging at 11 kW regardless of charger power).
  • Battery thermal management curves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does fast charging slow down after 80%?

To prevent overheating and lithium plating damage, the vehicle battery management system (BMS) intentionally ramps down current once cells reach ~80% capacity.

Why does EV fast charging slow down after reaching 80%?

Lithium battery management systems taper charging current above 80% to protect cell longevity and avoid thermal runaway.
