How to use the Mileage Calculator

  1. 1Fill your tank to full and record the odometer reading.
  2. 2At your next refill, note the distance driven and exact liters/gallons added.
  3. 3Enter distance and fuel quantity into the calculator.
  4. 4View fuel economy in km/L, US MPG, UK MPG, and Liters/100km.

How Mileage is Calculated

Fuel mileage equals total distance traveled divided by total fuel consumed over that distance.

Mathematical Formula
Mileage (km/L) = Distance (km) / Fuel Consumed (Liters) L/100km = 100 / (km/L) US MPG = km/L × 2.35215
Formula Variables & Logic

Tank-to-tank measurement eliminates inaccuracies from dashboard digital fuel gauges.

Worked Example: Weekly Commute Mileage Test
Sample Calculation
Scenario: A car travels 520 km on a tank refill of 38 liters of petrol.
Step-by-step breakdown
  1. 1Mileage = 520 / 38 = 13.68 km/L
  2. 2Equivalent US MPG = 13.68 × 2.35215 = 32.18 MPG
  3. 3Liters per 100km = 100 / 13.68 = 7.31 L/100km
Estimated Result
Vehicle mileage is 13.68 km/L (32.18 US MPG).

What affects Mileage results

  • Aggressive acceleration and hard braking.
  • Air conditioner compressor load.
  • Cold engine starts and short trips under 5 kilometers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the full-tank to full-tank method?

Fill the tank completely, reset trip meter to zero, drive normally until low, fill to full again, and divide the trip distance by liters pumped on the second refill.

Why does my dashboard mileage display differ from actual calculations?

In-car digital displays estimate fuel economy based on fuel injector pulse timing, which frequently reads 5% to 10% more optimistic than real pump volumes.
