How FD is Calculated
Most commercial banks compound fixed deposit interest on a quarterly basis (4 times per year).
A is maturity value, P is principal deposited, r is annual interest rate divided by 100, and t is tenure in years.
- 1Principal P = 200,000
- 2Quarterly compounding factor = (1 + 0.0725 / 4)²⁰ = 1.4316
- 3Maturity Amount = 200,000 × 1.4316 = ₹2,86,320
- 4Interest Earned = ₹86,320
What affects FD results
- Senior citizen interest rate bonuses (typically 0.50% extra).
- TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) deducted on annual interest.
- Premature withdrawal penalty terms.
