How to use the Electricity Cost Calculator

  1. 1Enter appliance power rating in Watts (e.g. 1500W for a space heater or 150W for a refrigerator).
  2. 2Enter hours used per day.
  3. 3Enter your local utility cost per kWh.
  4. 4View daily, monthly, and annual electricity cost estimates.

How Electricity Cost is Calculated

Wattage is multiplied by operating hours and divided by 1,000 to convert to kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiplied by the electricity tariff.

Mathematical Formula
Daily kWh = (Watts × Hours per Day) / 1,000 Monthly Cost = Daily kWh × Days per Month × Tariff per kWh
Formula Variables & Logic

1 Kilowatt-hour (kWh) equals 1,000 Watts of electrical power used continuously for one hour.

Worked Example: Air Conditioner Operating Cost
Sample Calculation
Scenario: A 1,500 Watt air conditioner running 8 hours per day for 30 days at ₹8.00 (or $0.15) per kWh.
Step-by-step breakdown
  1. 1Daily kWh = (1,500 × 8) / 1,000 = 12.0 kWh/day
  2. 2Monthly kWh = 12 × 30 = 360 kWh
  3. 3Monthly Cost = 360 × $0.15 = $54.00 (or ₹2,880)
  4. 4Annual Cost = 12 × 365 × $0.15 = $657.00
Estimated Result
The air conditioner costs $54.00/month (or ₹2,880/month) to run.

What affects Electricity Cost results

  • Thermostat temperature setting and room insulation quality.
  • Appliance energy efficiency star ratings (Inverter AC vs Non-inverter).
  • Tiered utility tariffs that charge higher rates for higher monthly consumption.
